About the Contest

General Information
The Healthy Vision Poster Contest encouraged children between the ages of 6 and 12 to develop posters about why it is important to take care of our eyes. The National Eye Institute (NEI) received more than 500 contest entries from more than 52 Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) chapters.

Promoting healthy vision
"See All You Can See," was the theme BGCA's members used to create colorful posters to illustrate their unique visions about the importance of sight. Participants were encouraged to consider how they can take care of their vision by doing such things as getting their eyes tested, wearing sunglasses, and wearing protective eyewear during sports activities.

The NEI provided each participating Boys & Girls Club with educational materials, including the NEI's the Eye Safety Handout and The Imperfect Eye Handout. Also, an Activity Guide, which provided BGCA leaders and educators with the opportunity and tools to talk with children about the importance of eye health.

Judging and Prizes
Posters in each category were judged on artistry, creativity, originality, and their ability to communicate a clear and positive message about healthy vision. Winners were selected in two age categories: 6 to 9-year-olds and 10 to 12-year-olds.

The grand prize winner in each category are featured on the covers of activity books for children created for Healthy Vision Month in May 2003. In addition, the children winners received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. The Boys & Girls Clubs to which the grand prize winners belong received $500 in art supplies from the NEI.

The first, second, and third runners up in each category were awarded a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. Honorable mention certificates were given to every participant and plaques were given to each participating Club.
